One of the first artists to apply the insights of <span class=\"a-text-bold\">Freudian psychoanalysis<\/span> to art, he is celebrated in particular for his surrealist practice, with such conceits as the<span class=\"a-text-bold\"> soft watches<\/span>or the <span class=\"a-text-bold\">lobster telephone<\/span>, now hallmarks of the surrealist enterprise, and of modernism in general.<\/p>\n<p>Dal\u00ed frequently described his paintings as \u201chand-painted dream photographs.\u201d Their tantalizing tension and interest resides in the <span class=\"a-text-bold\">precise rendering of bizarre elements<\/span> and incongruous arrangements.
